Why Maintenance?
Sewage treatment plant maintenance and servicing is essential and there is a large number of small-scale sewage treatment plants of differing designs and sizes installed throughout Malaysia.
The Suruhanjaya Pembetungan Air Negara (SPAN) is showing increasing concerns about the potential amount of pollution these sewage treatment plants can cause.
One of the primary ways to prevent pollution is to have the sewage treatment plant maintained and serviced correctly. It is common knowledge that many domestic sewage treatment plants do not get serviced until they stop working, or cause a pollution issue.
Sewage treatment plants have minimum maintenance requirements and these vary dependent on the size, type and age of the system. Typically, sewage treatment plants up to 18PE should be serviced and maintained once or twice a month. Commercial sewage treatment plants may require more frequent servicing intervals.
All sewage treatment plants are designed to promote the growth of Aerobic Micro-organisms, but the methods used to create the environment for the micro-organisms to develop and be maintained differ drastically.
Sewage treatment plants use processes which employ the use of air blowers, rotating discs, submersible pumps and filter media. All sewage treatment plants require periodic maintenance and the maintenance requirement depends mainly on the type of treatment process being used.
Failure to Maintenance
Consequences of failure to maintain a sewage treatment plant can result in:

Sludge Drying Bed Maintenance
Grass Cutting
Involves the cutting of grass once very 30 days (30 days cycle). Dispose tree branches, leaves and rubbish in the plant compound.

This is dependent on the space area that needs grass cutting and number of plants that need maintenance.

Network Maintenance
Repair and replace damaged pipelines and sewerline CCTV inspection for clokage.
​
Contract value depends on the extent of the damage to the IWK pipelines. Operation Unit which has complete connection systems experience frequent problems.

Mechanical and Electrical Works
Involves minor repair works on mechanical equipment and electrical such as pumps, aerators, electrical control panel and wiring.

Estimated of contract value is substantial for bigger Operations Unit as compared to small Operations Unit.

Security Services
Involves security service for Office and Reporting Centre throughout the country.
Value of contract depending on the number of security guards required and number of working hours.

Office Cleaning
Washing and cleaning of office space.
Value of contract depending on office space area.

Rubbish Disposal
Cleaning of rubbish disposal area and disposal of rubbish at approved disposal site.

Estimated value of contract depending on weight of rubbish and number of plants in the contract.

Sludge Drying Bed Maintenance
Cleaning of sludge drying bed by clearing sludge cake and sand. Transporting sludge cake to approved disposal site. Supply and flatten the sand evenly on the drying bed.
Estimated value of contract depending on size and number of drying bed that needs maintenance.
